What is a tarpaulin?
Tarpaulin is a generic term for a fabric made of polyester (PEs) with synthetic resin sheets placed on both sides and laminated.
JIS A 8952, the standard for building construction sheeting, standardizes fire retardancy, penetration resistance, tensile strength, etc. Tarpaulins are also classified as Class 1 or 2. Tarpaulins are used in the same way to prevent danger from falling objects, but the first category uses a sheet by itself, while the second category uses a sheet and wire mesh.
Uses of Tarpaulins
Tarpaulins are used as fabric for tents and banners, are often seen as sheets at construction sites, and are also processed into bags and backpacks. In addition, fire retardant tarpaulins are used in high-rise buildings over 31 m high, hospitals, inns, restaurants, gas stations, underground malls, theaters, commercial facilities, event venues, etc., where disaster prevention functions are important, and Article 8-3 of the Fire Defense Law requires that flameproof materials be used in facilities and buildings where many unspecified people enter and exit.
Tarpaulins with flameproof labeling can be used in such places as described above.
Principle of Tarpaulins
Tarpaulins are made of three layers, with a core of woven polyester and other long fibers, sandwiched between polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and laminated. The use of polyester as the core fiber makes it possible to add bending resistance. Furthermore, the use of polyvinyl chloride on the front and back surfaces adds a weather-resistant feature.
Thus, by taking advantage of the characteristics of the three layers, a fabric with added features such as weather resistance, durability, tensile strength, and fire retardancy can be easily used outdoors. Various functions can be added to tarpaulins by combining the functions of the synthetic resin on both sides and the core fiber in the middle.
Therefore, when making flameproof tarpaulins, the core fiber is made of glass-processed long fibers to enhance the flameproof property. For high-strength tarpaulins, tensile strength is added by weaving in carbon or aramid, which are known as high-strength, high-elasticity fibers.
Types of Tarpaulins
1. Waterproof Tarpaulin
Waterproof tarpaulin is a waterproof sheet used primarily outdoors. It is impervious to water and moisture and is widely used for outdoor luggage and equipment, protective covers for construction sites, and camping shelters. It is durable and serves to protect objects from wind, rain, and ultraviolet rays.
2. Transparent Tarpaulin
Transparent tarpaulins are highly transparent sheets that allow visual confirmation of the contents inside, and are used especially for showcases, exhibition covers, and event tents. It is both waterproof and transparent, making it suitable for use in protecting products and exhibits while displaying them in a pleasing manner.
3. Cold-Resistant Tarpaulin
Cold-resistant tarpaulin is a type of sheet suitable for use in cold climates. To prevent hardening and damage due to low temperatures, special additives and manufacturing techniques are used to enhance cold resistance. It is used to ensure durability in transportation, storage, and outdoor work in cold climates.
4. UV-Resistant Tarpaulin
UV-resistant tarpaulin is a type of sheet suitable for prolonged outdoor use. Special UV absorbers and antioxidants are added to prevent deterioration and discoloration caused by UV rays. It is used to maintain color and quality during long-term outdoor storage and use in areas exposed to sunlight.
5. Flameproof Tarpaulin
Flameproof tarpaulins are sheets that are flame retardant to reduce the risk of fire. It contains a special flameproof additive that makes it safe for use in environments with sparks and high temperatures. It is used in construction sites, event venues, and outdoor kitchens where outdoor fires are often used, and is suitable for fire safety applications.
